Andrew Klavan:  A Strange Habit of Mind (2022)
One of those long biblical beards men grow when their heads can no longer contain their self-regard and it simply flows out of their chins all the way down to their sternums.

By temperament he was a loner, if only because, although never wholly content in the solitary state, he was almost invariably even more miserable in the company of others.

The Parting Glass

Of all the money that e'er I had
I spent it in good company
And all the harm I've ever done
Alas it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To mem'ry now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be to you all

So fill to me the parting glass
And drink a health whate’er befall,
And gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

Of all the comrades that e'er I had
They're sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I had
They'd wish me one more day to stay

But since it fell unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I gently rise and softly call
Good night and joy be to you all

A man may drink and not be drunk
A man may fight and not be slain
A man may court a pretty girl
And perhaps be welcomed back again
But since it has so ought to be
By a time to rise and a time to fall
Come fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all

The experience of moving online actually bears quite a few similarities to becoming a New Yorker.  Disorienting and seemingly endless, the Internet conversation moves at lightning speed and according to unstated social rules that can bewilder outsiders.  Also, like New Yorkers, residents of the Internet do not suffer fools, or mince words in belittling them.

It is not the strongest among us who survive.  Nor is it the most intelligent.  It is those among us who are the most adaptable to change.
Beautiful Lies

If you don't know how to look at her, her hidden alleys and minuscule precious little side streets, her aura of mischief, her throbbing nightlife, you might find yourself intimidated by New York City, even repulsed by her odors and sounds, you might even turn away from her because she's too brash, too haughty.  But it would be your loss.

Writing in The Wall Street Journal, John Steele Gordon on Why Government Can't Run a Business:
Consider a thought experiment.  There is a national widget crisis and Sen. Wiley Snoot is chairman of the Senate Widget Committee.  There are two technologies that are possible solutions to the problem, with Technology A widely thought to be the more promising of the two.  But the company that has been developing Technology B is headquartered in Sen. Snoot's state and employs 40,000 workers there.  Which technology is Sen. Snoot going to use his vast legislative influence to push?

Mistakes frequently found on websites
Viewer-friendly sites should avoid the following:
 -  Required registration/Log ins
 -  Too quick automatic refresh on long pages
 -  Visual busyness
 -  Paragraphs of all caps
 -  Anything that moves (movement should be viewer initiated)
 -  Sound (again, sound should be viewer initiated)
